I play online on the Internet Chess Club. It's not free – costs about 50 USD for 6 months – but you get a lot for your money, including real time viewing of big tournaments, and as much blitz chess as you can handle. Today for example the ICC was showing the top 30 boards at the Dresden Olympiad, including all four games played by the England team. There's a range of blitz speeds available. I play 5-minute most of the time but 1-minute and 3-minute are also very popular. There are various interfaces available for connecting to the ICC. Windows users can choose between BlitzIn and Dasher. The best Mac interface is Jin, though it doesn't have quite as much functionality. Whichever you use, it's very easy to connect and get started. For more information go to www.chessclub.com.
