Webmaster's remarks:
• The first two matches in the U100 are presented, on the ECF website, as a Preliminary round. This is clearly a mistake and we have re-labelled the round as Quarter-finals. Later note: so has the ECF website.
• Is this the first time a Union's 2nd nominee (see U180) has had to play in a Preliminary round while their 3rd nominee goes straight to the Quarter-final? In fact all the divisions with Preliminary rounds have a 2nd nominee in the Prelim while a 3rd nominee escapes that fate. There's no rule against it, but we've a feeling it has been avoided in the past by quietly manipulating the draw. Maybe the ECF's forthcoming new County Match Rules should address the question.
Note 21.1.12. Controller Alex Holowczak has noted our observation and asked us to publish a revision. S2 and S3 are transposed in the U180, so that S3 is now in the Prelim. It seems the anomaly was carefully avoided in the U140 but forgotten about in the U180! It could have led to unseemly Southern Counties rivalry to finish third rather than second, so the repair makes sense. Our feeling is that the anomaly should, where possible, be avoided in the general case in future. Not just where the nominees are from the same Union.
• Who'd be a Prelim winner? An away draw in the Quarter-final is to be expected, but all four Prelim winners are away in the Semi-final as well if they get that far. Luck of the draw, we suppose. Later note: all right, we'll say it. Chances were 1 in 16. But it's curious they're all in match D (1 in 256).
• ECF website 14.1.12: "In accordance with Rule E12, the Director of Home Chess will nominate a central venue in which all Finals of all sections will be played. The announcement of this venue will follow shortly." This startled us. Rule E12 hasn't stipulated that since the SCCU's amendment was accepted at the 2011 AGM. The Director has discretion now. Our first thought was that the ECF had simply overlooked the change. After all, the website's version of the rules was still showing the old E12 until (we think) yesterday. But perhaps what's meant is that the Director, exercising his discretion in accordance with E12, has decided on a central venue. He hasn't announced a decision as far as we know, unless this is his way of doing it. It might have helped if he'd been explicit.
