The first match of the season has come and gone. It is with pleasure that I state:
Middlesex were able to restore pride by securing an 8-8 result against SCCU favourites Surrey. It must be remembered that although Mx got to last season's ECF final along the way we suffered two embarrassing results - a 10-6 reverse to Herts (magnificently avenged in the semi-final) and a 12.5-3.5 reverse to Surrey. The latter score was definitely an humiliation but to lose to the favourites especially when the omens where against you is no bad thing!
So how did the match unfold? Surrey as usual fielded a strong team including Basman, Berry, and Buckley (team average 186) and when thinking about the last time the sides met would be confident of recording victory. However a surprise was in store as we were significantly stronger than the last outing. This time although being the slightly weaker team we could look forward to achieving a result. Graeme acknowledged that he wouldn't like to state who is likelier to win, 'It is just too close a call'. This statement was certainly justified as at one stage it looked as though we were going to upset the odds and secure a win but in the end a draw was reasonable - 1/2point gained rather than dropped.
After two games Mx had fallen 0.5-1.5 behind. A series of draws meant this deficit was maintained until, with the score standing at 4-5, Martin Lee obtained the first point for us. Scores level. Another series of draws then Surrey again take the lead - 6-7, however the last three games were looking favourable. Is this really happening? Are Mx ahead in the match? Yes, the unthinkable was beginning to be considered: Mx could actually win. With Simon and Dave Moskovic both duly converting their winning positions, Mx were ahead for the first time 8-7. A draw at the very least in the final game would have meant that Mx were more than able to meet Adidas's challenge - Impossible is nothing! Unfortunately Mx's lead was short-lived as Surrey were able to record victory in the last game. Final score 8-8. A job well done by the team in what did indeed turn out to be a close and tense encounter. If we are looking for more positives of the two sides Mx can be the happier as we win on board count! Always a useful thing in the event of tied scores at the end of the season!
Having taken on one of the SCCU heavyweights this result gives us a fillip. We can look forward to our next game away to the juggernaut known as Kent on the 8th November. Will contact you nearer the time.
Congratulations once again to the team for getting this season off to a great start.
