Bad day at the office A season that promises much got off to the worst possible start with a 6-10 loss to the enigmatic Sussex. Why enigmatic? Sussex are a team with an uncanny knack of turning out respectable home teams but are unable to replicate this on the road, so when you have 3 home matches, especially against one who is a notorious slow starter, you better make the most of it - and they did. www.sccu.ndo.co.uk/match1.htmOn paper the match was destined to be close (Sussex ave. 189 Mx 190). With such a minimal strength in difference to use cricketing parlance, the destiny of the match lay in whether our top order would be able to counteract their middle order. As the match unfolded it transpires that Sx's middle order prevailed to the extent where matches which seemed to be in our favour unexpectedly swung to them. All in all not much to write home about. The most surprising result of the day though was the Surrey-Herts match. Surrey a renowned SCCU heavyweight were turned over 9.5-6.5 by little Herts. Herts seem to have the hoodoo over Surrey as two cycles ago their unexpected victory saw them lift the SCCU for the first time. The League Table then after Round 1 is: 1. Sussex 2. Herts 3. Kent 4. Essex 5. Surrey 6. Middlesex Next match away to Essex which gives us a great opportunity to display bouncebackability!
