Another close run thing for Middlesex U160! There were quite a few decisive results in the match. The highlights were as follows. First up was Michael Price who had a rapidfire win which ruthlessly exploited his opponent's lightly defended king. Unfortunately I was too busy making a hash of my own game to see much of that one, but Michael's position looked overwhelming and thus fun to play. On board 1 Christopher Kreuzer had a big material advantage, but an almost equally big temporal disadvantage. Fortunately the former trumped the latter and he won fairly comfortably. John Tobisch had a good win. It was another match I didn't really see too much of, but beating one of the talented Sussex juniors must have tasted sweet. That said, up until the last half an hour or so, we were 1 down with 2 games still to finish. Greg Breed's game had been seesawing for quite a while, but looked to be petering out into a draw. However, the maxim that "he who blunders last, blunders best" applied and the Sussex player obligingly walked into a fork, so we were all square with one to play. On board 16, Steve Sonnis had apparently left his opponent off the hook earlier on, but made no mistake the next time around and won an exchange. The rest was, as Nigel put it, "just technique", but it was well applied by Steve and he bagged the full point. So in the end, we won 8.5-7.5 and I stepped out into the cold Horsham air well satisfied.
