Some belated notes on our match against Herts...
I must admit I felt some trepidation in this match, probably as a result of some real kickings I've personally received playing against them over the years. However, this visit to the north was rather more agreeable.
We had a surfeit of fine results on the day. The highlights were: Christopher Kreuzer's win which arose when the board opened up in the middlegame giving mutual chances. After a couple of errors from each side, the Herts player walked into a mate.
Ray Harper also had a nice game when his opponent played slightly passively and misplaced his queen. He then allowed a tactic which would net a piece and resigned once he realised his error.
Samuel Le won when he sacrificed a pawn in order to open up the h-file in a position where the players had castled on opposite sides. Samuel then played to open up his opponents king and won using a discovered attack.
Geoff Hermes played the czech defence and controlled the c-file. His opponent lost a pawn and was left with a knight trying unsuccessfully to defend against a bishop with pawns on both sides of the board. I didn't see much of Richard Dunn's game, even though he was sitting next to me. He seemed to be material up for a while and after subduing his opponent's counterplay simplified off to win efficiently.
Michael Price had the white side of the Ruy Lopez and must have been delighted when his opponent blundered early on, dropping a pawn and losing castling rights. The Herts player played on, but was obliged to resign when a piece down with a promotion looming.
All in all, a thoroughly pleasurable result.
The final stage match is on the 12th March away at Surrey who have the same number of match points as us. Hopefully we'll be able to end the season on a real high.
