Dear Middlesex Members,
As you are no doubt aware we have once again seen a double-booking at the Exmouth Arms. A number of Middlesex members, both playing in the match and otherwise, have again raised concerns about the ongoing suitability of the Exmouth Arms for future matches. This is in addition to comments made by opposing teams and members of the SCCU committee.
The committee have been looking into the suitability of other venues for a period of time; the majority of which presented a variety of problems. Either they cost too much, couldn’t provide the regularity of availability, could be subject to priority overbookings, lacked suitable transport facilities or were located in the middle of nowhere. Those that have been used as short-term solutions over the past few years do not offer the long-term suitability that we require from a venue.
Until now. Thanks to hard work by a number of people, though none so much as Anthony Fulton and Robert Kane, I am pleased to be able to announce our new venue. This is The Pilot, 56 Wellesley Road, London, W4 4BZ; telephone 020 8994 0828. Located at the end of the M4 it provides good road links [and has free street parking at weekends] as well as good public transport links both by bus as well as train and tube [Gunnersbury station is a short walk]. In addition the venue offers both food and drink at weekends. www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/10/1053/Pilot/Chiswick
The Manageress, Lucy, has already made those members of the committee that have visited most welcome and we look forward to building a long and successful relationship with the venue.
Middlesex has one remaining [home] match this season: Open: Middlesex v Essex [05/03/11]. This will be the first county match to take place at the new venue [Drunken Knights vs West London [London League] took place there; a good evening was had by all]. If distance allows, we would then also hope to be able to use this venue for ECF-stage matches, and possibly for the Middlesex Individual tournament, before fully moving over for 2011-2012. I would like to see as many Middlesex Members there as possible for this match; playing, drinking or blitzing, whether or whether not you play for the Open team. [Editor's Note please forgive the lateness in posting this message. I can let you know that a number did turn up and a good time was had by all, especially considering the fact that Mx had a debut win (see match report)] When County fixtures are finalised MCCA Committee would like to see Mx members show their support for the teams a a matter of course.
Please remember that this is a pub foremost and a County venue second. Middlesex are only able to both obtain and retain venues of this quality by making use of the facilities that they offer, both in terms of food and/or drink. Whilst we can’t, and shouldn’t, make people spend money it is worth remembering that should this move not be seen as financially viable by the venue then we will either end up with higher club fees, board fees or facing a move to a less-than-suitable alternative. Something I’m sure none of you want to see.
If anyone has any queries about this new venue please contact me directly and I will be more than happy to speak to you.
Best wishes, and many thanks for your patience,
Peter Ackley
Middlesex President
